Derivatives: friend or foe?

Intermediate session

Date: 7 October 2008 - London

Presenter: Chris Wagstaff

Derivatives have a reputation for complexity and danger and often conjure up an image of casino capitalism. Warren Buffett even called them financial weapons of mass destruction. However, arguably derivatives are simply tools that exist to solve problems and are in many cases a more efficient way to invest.

This session dispels the myths and explains how and why derivatives are used by pension schemes.

Suggested entry requirements: Prospective delegates are advised to have a reasonable understanding of financial markets, equities in particular.

Benefits of attending this session: After attending this session you should more fully appreciate how derivatives can be employed to more efficiently manage scheme assets and liabilities.
